Question:
Does anyone have any info on the effects on the repeated application of
Mosquito repellent on a childs skin. What is the mildest mosquito
repellent being sold that still works. We have tried the Skin so Soft
(Bath Oil, not the repellent) and that does not do it)
My son is extremely allergic to mosquito bites, plus some of the bugs in
Bangkok carry some really nasty things like Dengue fever, Jap.
Encephalitis ....so we really need to keep the bug biting to a minimum....
Long pants are a real drag in the the hot/humid weather....
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Answer:
Australia's consumer magazine 'Choice' had an article in their latest
issue. It named the nasty as a chemical with a common name of DEET, I
can't remember its full name. This chemical builds up in the brain tissue
and has caused encephalitus (sp?) in small children. The children used as
examples in the article had had repellant with 10% DEET applied every day
for 3 months.
My children were in childcare in Rockhampton, Australia recently - an area
with mosquito problems similar to yours - and they were putting Dettol and
baby oil on the kids skin. (Dettol is the brand name of an antiseptic
solution in Australia) Tea Tree oil mixed with baby oil is also supposed
to work.
