Question:
Has anyone had any first-hand experience with these new mosquito control
devices I've seen advertised lately. Most are propane powered and attract
the female mosquitos via carbon dioxide, heat and octenal. Then tend to be
priced about $200 and up. I'm just curious how well they work, and what
are the drawbacks (if any).
We live in a rural area where the mosquitos can be bad this time of year,
especially in early evening and nightfall, and would like to enjoy our
backyard again. We have been considering a screened in room or gazebo as
well, but they can be pricey.
Answer:
- I got hordes of those blood-suckers around here
as well.
I checked out the machines as well on Google-Groups. Seems there are
varying opinions.
The Mosquito Magnet seems to get good feedback but the thing has to run 24/7
for weeks to make a difference. Gotta kill the female's first before the
biting slacks off. No pun intended.
-We used to lasso them and use horses to control them, but we've found that
cattle prods are pretty effective against the little ones.
-Free mosquito control at our house.
A pair of barn swallows has built a nest under the awning on part of our
deck. It's a huge wrap-around deck, and we don't use that area much.
They don't seem to be bothered much by my husband and I and the dog, but
the cat has found it necessary to stay in the house most of the time. We
have had *ZERO* mosquitos near us when we sit outside.
We put a large shallow cardboard box under the nest for a "litter box"
for them.
I understand that barn swallows will nest in the same place year after
year. This is a good thing, IMO.
