Question:
I'm travelling to SE Asia at the end of July and am looking for a mosquito
net big enough for two people yet light and small enough to fit in my
backpack. Does anyone know where I can purchase one?
Answer:
I found that the best thing to do is make one yourself. Doesn't take
long to do. Even hire someone to sew it if you want (try someone
like a dressmaker).
The problem is that the commercial ones tend to consist of a wire ring
which is suspended from the ceiling. The net attaches to this ring
and drapes around your bed. Sounds OK? Well in a hotel room you may
attach it to the light fitting - but imagine your embassasment when
you find you pulled the light down when you turned over in the night...
You also get some fairly big insects using the net as a ladder to
climb up from the floor to your bed.
Better is to buy some netting, make it into a big cylinder. Put some
tags along one half of the top circumference, cover this end with
netting. Make sure the cylinder is long and wide. Gather the other
end and tie together. You sleep inside the bag.
Use string to attach the tags to windows, bed fittings or use strong
suckers to stick to the walls (but don't peel the paint...)
This works well, but I hope you can buy something as good to save
yourself the effort, if so, please post here to let us know.
