Question:
We are scheduled to arrive Fort Wilderness Campground
on Oct. 18 for a week. Should we be concerned with
this mosquito alert? Staying in a hotel is one thing,
but staying at a campground with a 4 yr old and an 11
yr old and not being able to do things after dark
is not a good thing. Could this alert be lifted
by then? Also they are saying to use products containing
Deet. I always heard that this should not be used on
young children.

Yes you should be *aware* of the alert...remember not to leave your brain at
home. Other than that read all the warnings and follow the suggestions and you
should be ok.

You can still do things after dark...just not *all* the things that usually
happen. If you are out after dark, wear long sleeves and pants and/or wear
insect repellant.
> Could this alert be lifted by then?
Not likely...the alerts are said to remain in effect until they can go *three*
weeks without any signs of the virus in the sentinel chickens. The chickens are
still testing positive (new chickens are testing positive that is...obviously
the chickens with it will test positive forever.) Just remember, that so far,
not a single person has tested positive - in the last two major outbreaks, any
where from 100 and 200 people got ill from the virus and around 10 people died
in each of the outbreaks. Apparently the alerts are working and folks are
taking care of themselves and/or this particular strain of the virus is weaker
than the other outbreaks.

You are right, young children should not have the high concentration (30% is
recommended for adults), and very young children shouldn't have it at all.
