Question:
Mosquitoes are back. What is the best repellent? Living in Ottawa area.
Answer:
- Consumers Reports just did a report on them. The Deep Woods stuff
seemed to last the longest. I have not really read the story however and
often after reading it, I make my pick based on a different set of needs
than CR made their choice. You might want to check out CR.
-One summer I tried eating more garlic than ususal. It worked.
I got almost no mosquito bites. The drawback is that, if you
eat too much, you may smell a little spicy!
I've heard that some of the garlic oils, or whatever, that
are sold in the healt food stores repel the mosquitoes without
the odorous side effects. Don't know if that's true.
I'd like to know if there are plants that I could plant in my
garden that effectively repel mosquitoes. I live in central
Texas - zone 8.
-I don't know about the garlic, but I planted a Citranosa(?) plant last year
next to my front door last year and it seemed to repel the mosquitos. I
never had any problem there, anyway. They were being sold by the Boy Scouts
or something. I think it is a tropical plant, but I live in NE Ohio and it
grew to about 2 feet until mid December, when it finally died. I pretty much
just threw it in the ground. No watering or care at all and in full sun.
They advertise them here as 'mosquito plants.'
