Question:
I know it's a bit early, but I'm thinking of my trips this summer
or just Spring in local areas with skeeters. I've invested in lots
of synthetic clothing, and I'd rather not have DEET eat away
at them. I'm also rather allergic to DEET, unless I've taken
my antihistamines first.
Anyone tried Cutter Advanced or maybe some product outside
the US that contains picardin?
Answer:
-Have you tried the clothing treatment spray stuff? Usually contains
PERMETHRIN and claims to protect for 6 weeks or a dozen washings or
something like that. I tried some last summer and it was much better
than nothing, but not perfect. Might be worth looking into.
-Permethrin is a powerful neurotoxin.
Picaridin isn't and it also has a very low level of toxicity.
How about wearing appropriate clothing and treating ONLY exposed areas with
Picaridin or DEET? The Permethrin methodology of covering an entire piece of
clothing is just plain stupid because you WILL absorb some of that
neurotoxin through your skin.
-I've likely breathed in permethrin during international air travel.
The cabin is sprayed (depending on local regulations) with an
insect killer "deemed safe by the WHO" .
I live in Northern California where the mild climate can mean
mosquitos in late Winter. I absolutely hate DEET because of
what it does to some plastics and my allergic reaction.
