Insect repellent

Question:
Someone told me that a mixture of Dettol and Johnson's Baby Oil is effective as an insect repellent.

Can anyone confirm - and give the proportions to use - or alternative strategies?

Answer:
-afaik DEET is the only thing that really works. If you don't believe SCIENCE then citronella things seem to work to some extent, but keep slapping them on!

Failing that, wide brimed hat and net, long sleeves and tuck trousers into socks.

-O-So-Soft from Avon has given good results for me. As does 80% Deet. But my theory is that the OSS drowns or poisons them rather than repels them since I tend to find them on my arms dead.

However I've never tried anything in the really bad midge clouds. I just avoid the Western Highlands June to August.
