Question:
The skitters are fierce this year in north Ontario and the Mosquito
Magnets are stacked to the ceiling at the hardware. The science sounds
good: create a bigger heat signature with CO2 than a human with a
propane burner and the beasts will be drawn to the trap. Sounds
good...but I remember the ceramic heaters in the 80s had a perfect rap
too. Has anybody bought one of the Magnets? Do they work?
Answer:
-...first they came out with those ultrasonic pest repellers now they have
mosquito attractors....the attractors should work about as good as the
repellers...if Paul Harvey and Rush Limbaaaaw say they work, who am I to
question them?....pseudoscience sells snake oil and fools enough abound...
-I was just scanning in some newspaper clippings from the mid 60's for the local
historical society. Robert Iananni of Amazing Devices was testing a mosquito
trap he built using charcoal briquettes as the attractant. He claimed it was
the infrared emitted by the hot charcoal that attracted them to the high
voltage zapper. We now "know" that its probably the CO2 that brought them in.
What really caught my attention was the bushel basket full of mosquitos used as
the measuring device. He claimed that he wouldn't be marketing it. The
picture showed a pretty large unit, mounted on a 4x8 sheet of plywood.
-The May issue of Consumer Reports Magazine reported tests on
The Mosquito Magnet Liberty, the Lentek Mosquito Trap MK01 and the Applica
SonicWeb ICH500. The first two were rated good and were essentially equal
in performance. The last one was about 60% less effective.
