Question:
I would like to put a canopy/sheer curtains over my four poster bed, but
need to do it very frugally. I don't have the necessary rails one usually
sees from post to post - not sure where to get them or how much they would
be. Thought I might be able to figure out some substitute over which to
drape the canopy material that would still work and be aesthetically
pleasing, but not sure how to go about it. I really primarily want sheer
curtains on each side of the bed - not necessarily over the top because we
have a ceiling fan, so I guess canopy might not be the right term here.
Also, I don't have a sewing machine, so will need to use sewing tape or
something similar to loop them over the rail and then will need to drape or
pool the material probably on the floor. Would love to have suggestions
from anyone who has done this or who can maybe direct me to links for
suggestions.
Answer:
-This may be a little hard for me to explain.. but I’ll give it a shot.
Take 4 blocks of wood... attach them to your ceiling at the outer corners of
your bed. Take 3 spring rods (maybe 4 if you want the top to be closed in too)
and put them up between the blocks. (Of course you can paint the blocks to
make them look finished)
-Depends a lot on your bed posts; e.g. bed post strength, height, shape at top &
probably a few other things. (Unsolicited advice: Unless done professionally, I
suggest that you not modify the bed posts.) Rather iffy, but you may able to
use 4 pieces of PVC pipe for rails and four PVC connectors (one at each bed post
to connect the rails and to (hopefully) act as caps over the bed posts. The
pipe can be painted. Two concerns: 1. You would want the rails to have a small
diameter, but small diameter pipe may not be stiff enough (you would not want a
noticeable sag). 2. Finding a PVC connector that well fits over the top of the
bed posts? PVC can be found at Lowe's & Home Depot.
(I'm sorry, but more unsolicited advice: First test the Canopy idea. You could
tie a cord between bed posts on one side of bed and pen some sheers there.
Check and see if the ceiling fan is a problem. Check and see if getting into
and out of bed is a problem. Check and see if making the bed is a problem.
Leave the sheers there for a couple of weeks to make sure you like them before
you proceed.)
