Question:
I would like to get into contact with anyone who regularly uses a fly and
ground sheet for camping rather than a tent.
I recently spent two nights under a fly in the forest here in New Zealand
and was plagued by mosquitos. My bivvy bag has mosquito mesh, but I found
it difficult to sleep with my head fully enclosed.
I would be grateful if someone could give me any information about
mosquito mesh or bug bivys that might overcome this problem.
Answer:
-I live in Florida where it is usually to warm and muggy to enclose one's
self in a tent; so years ago I started using a screen house as my
camping tent. It is large and not good for backpacking though.
It so happens that I was in the infantry in Vietnam where we used
ponchos and skeeter nets for our "backpacking trips." If you can get
your hands on a surplus USArmy net, it has a bunch of tie-downs you can
use to hang your net. Lay rain fly over it. Makes a very nice open air
shelter you can pitch low to the ground to thwart wind.
