Question:
Does anyone know of a natural mosquito repellent that REALLY works?
I have tried cintronella and various other essential oils, and essential
oil preperations. Here in Oregon (Mount Jefferson and the Three Sisters
Wilderness) the stuff only works for about 10 minutes. In the Three
Sisters it only lasted for 2 minutes or not at all. I have tried over
dosing on garlic - to no avail. I even went to the absurd lenght of
purchasing a little solar device which was supposed to give off a sound
irritating to the mosuqito. Well, they were oblivious.
Answer:
-A few years ago I operated a marina on a mountain lake in the Coronado
National Forest in Southern Arizona. We had both misquitoes and chiggers
during the summer months. The best repellent I have ever used was spraying on
an Avon product called "Skin So Soft". Although it is an after-bath
moisturizing oil, it really works. It comes in a pump spray, regular bottle,
and handy individual foil wrapped packets like those handy wipes. No poisons,
and it really works.
-Twenty years ago we lived in the Quebec bush at the bottom of what seemed
like an ocean of mosquitos and blackflies. I always wondered what the
natives who used to live there did to repel insects. After some research
we found the answer:
rancid bear grease.
Effective, no doubt, and certainly natural. Most likely also repelled friends,
neighbours, family, and loved ones!
